My Hall of Fame Ballot - Alan Trammell

#2 on my Hall on my Fame Ballot

Alan Trammell: Trammell was solid with both the glove and bat but played at a time when he was overshadowed by Ozzie Smith and Cal Ripken Jr. During Trammell's and Cal Ripken's prime from 1982-1993 Ripken had an OPS+121 and Trammell's was 120. Ozzie is the greatest of all time with the glove but he wasn't much with the bat. Ozzie's career line was: .262/.337/.328/ OPS+87. Trammell's was: .285/.352/.415/ OPS+110. Trammell also created 100 more runs than Ozzie while playing 2 fewer season. I tend to think that Trammell's bat makes up for the fact that he wasn't as good with the glove as Ozzie (Trammell still won 4 gold gloves). Thanks to guys like Arod, Jeter, Nomar, and Tejada people tend to forget that historically shortstops weren't always great hitters. When Trammell retired in '96 he was 4th all time in home runs by a shortstop and ninth in hits. There are only 5 players to play 80% of their careers at shortstop and have over 2,300 hits and an OPS+ over 100 and Trammell is one of them. Trammell also should have won the MVP in 1987 but lost to George Bell becaue Bell hit more homers and drove in more runs while playing left field. Trammell had a higher BA/OPS and had an OPS+155 compared to Bell's 146. If Trammell had won the MVP that season he probably would have received a lot more votes because voters tend to like guys that have won MVPs. Trammell has no shot at getting in but he still has my vote.
