NHL Western Conference

Most surprising team: Phoenix Coyotes
The Coyotes have the fifth most points in the West thanks to Olli Jokinen and Shane Doan. No one thought this team would be in the playoff hunt but there they are looking to make it to the postseason for the first since 2002 which could help save hockey in Phoenix (which just sound weird).

Most disappointing team: Dallas Stars
Injuries to Sergei Zubov and Brenden Morrow have hurt them but they still have enough talent to have a better second half.

Hart Trophy: Joe Thornton
He has been the best player on the best team in the West. If they gave out an MVP for the last 3.5 seasons Thornton would win it. He has produced for the Sharks since arriving from some other team back East.

Vezina Trophy and Calder Trophy: Steve Mason
Mason is only 20 years old (let that sink in for a moment). I think we are watching the beginning of the next great goalie. He is 1st in shutouts, 1st in GAA, and 5th in save pct. I think Columbus will sneak in the playoffs this season, for thefirst time in team history, thanks to the play of Mason in goal.

Norris Trophy: Duncan Keith
Keith is having a breakout year just like Dennis Wideman. Keith has been great on both ends of the ice for the Blackhawks, who have a ton of young talent. Is anyone else excited to see 5 of the original 6 playing so well? I'll cut Toronto some slack as I am sure that Brian Burke will turn them around.

Jack Adams Trophy: Todd McCellan
McCellan is off to a great start in his coaching career as the Sharks are tied with the Bruins for the best record at the break. That wasn't an easy spot to go into and take over for the best coach in the Sharks' history but McCellan has done very well.

Alright, that's about it, but I will have that Bruins post next week. Have a great weekend.
